Maritime and Technical English for Deck Officers

Volume 1

There are multiple materials dedicated to Maritime English and they all cover a proper study area, suitable for the training needs of seafarers. This book is mainly oriented on the professional needs of officers working on the bridge of a ship. Those who are responsible for navigation, bridge resource management, communications, safety management, cargo loading and unloading operations will find here the most common situations lived by a Deck Officer. The book covers a wide range of professional situations integrated into the relevant topics which define the daily activities of those officers. Nowadays, most ships are manned by multilingual crews and the need for fluency in Maritime and Technical English is of utmost importance. However, it is also crucial to be acquainted and train the standard language used at sea - the Standard Marine Communication Phrases. The structure and the topics of this book also aims to be in accordance with the contents of section 2 of the IMO Model course 3.17, which concerns Specialized Maritime English. The guiding level of this book is Intermediate (B2) as it is considered to be the adequate level for an officer to be able to perform his (her) duties. The accuracy of the topics covered is focused on the basic terminology which is considered to be necessary for the daily performance of a Deck Officer and according with what is described in STCW, Table A-II/1, Table A-IV/2 and Table A-V/2.
